The Rain in Spain Is Outside My Window – October 17, 2009

I am up and out by 9:00AM.  The bakery next door is closed on Sundays so I decide to head for Sal y Azúcar, which is a good fifteen minute walk away.  The good news is that I can work off my breakfast before I even eat it.  I make my purchase and head back home.  When I left the house it was sunny.  However, the sky is now beginning to cloud up.  By the time I get home there are threatening clouds in the sky.

We sit down to a breakfast of a fresh fruit salad, some freshly baked croissants and coffee. Mid-way through breakfast the rain begins and we scurry to close all the open windows.  We sit down again and finish our breakfast.  It appears that the weather will dictate today’s activities and the word “indoors” looms large in our plans.

We spend the rest of the morning and the early afternoon working on the computer.  I write my blog entry and Susan works on her photos.  Around 2:00 we begin our lunch preparations.  We had purchased salad makings and two lovely steaks at the market on Friday and it is time to make the salad, cook up the mushrooms that we had also bought on Friday and get the steaks ready to be pan fried since we do not have an appropriate grill.  We open a bottle of Vía Mágica that was bottled by Benjamín Romeo exclusively for the 2008 Spanish National Magic Convention in Valencia. It is not commercially available.  Robert parker has not rated it, but if he did he would probably give it a rating of 92.  It is that good.

We finish our meal, wash the dishes and decide to take a walk, since it has stopped raining.  We stop for a coffee and then a few minutes later we stop for gelato.  As we peruse the flavor choices we are struck by the fact that there are some unique flavor choices – onion, boquerones en vinagre and fabada asturiana.  We go the more traditional route and order pistachio.  We return home around 5:00 and we spend the next little bit of time reading.

At 7:30 we decide to take in a movie.  PARIS is playing in a dubbed version at our local movie theater.  The original French version is showing in town, also but I have misremembered the start time and that showing is already underway.  Here is a link to the trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwROhrqTyi8 . The movie is enjoyable although I find it to be overly long because it tries to tell too many stories.  Juliette Binoche’s voice has been dubbed into Spanish, but her presence lights up the screen.  After the movie we head to a restaurant called Sagardí and have a light supper.  Then it is back home and we are in bed before midnight.

Sagardí is a restaurant that offers a variety of hot and cold canapés to its customers. You hold on to the toothpicks and when it is time to pay, they count your toothpicks to know how much you have consumed.
